One of the most common questions we get at Kozy Nest is: "I want a marble dining table that seats 6 — what size do I need?" It sounds simple, but dining table sizing is one of the most misunderstood parts of furnishing a home. Get it wrong and the table either overwhelms the room or leaves guests cramped.
This guide answers the question directly: what size marble dining table do you need for 4, 6, or 8 people — and which pieces in our range fit each category.
The Golden Rule of Dining Table Sizing
Every person at a dining table needs approximately 60cm of table width to sit comfortably — enough room for a place setting, a glass, and elbow room. Use this as your baseline when calculating how many people a table seats.
You also need to allow at least 90cm of clearance on all sides of the table for chairs to be pulled out and for people to move around comfortably. In a tight space, 75cm is the absolute minimum.
4 Seater Marble Dining Tables
Recommended dimensions: 90–120cm round, or 120cm rectangular/oval
Room size needed: From approximately 3m x 3m
A 4 seater table is ideal for apartments, smaller dining rooms, or as a secondary dining space (a kitchen nook, a breakfast area). Round tables are particularly well-suited to 4 seaters — they encourage conversation, have no awkward corners, and feel generous even in compact spaces.
Our Calacatta Breccia Marble Round Dining Table (90cm diameter) is a beautiful 2–4 seater option — compact enough for an apartment dining area, with the drama of natural Italian marble and a solid brass pedestal base.
For a slightly larger 4 seater that can stretch to 6 with the right chairs, our round marble dining tables in Calacatta Viola and White Onyx offer generous proportions while maintaining a round form.

6 Seater Marble Dining Tables
Recommended dimensions: 150–180cm rectangular/oval, or 130–150cm round
Room size needed: From approximately 3.5m x 4m
The 6 seater is the most popular dining table size in Australian homes — large enough for a family or dinner party, compact enough to fit in most dining rooms without dominating the space. Oval tables are particularly well-suited to 6 seaters: they seat the same number as a rectangle but feel less formal and allow easier conversation across the table.
Our oval marble dining tables are ideal 6 seater options:
- White Arabescato Marble Dining Table — oval form, bold white and grey veining, sculptural fluted base. A refined 6 seater for contemporary dining rooms.
- Calacatta Viola Marble Dining Table — oval top in Calacatta Viola marble with travertine cylindrical legs. Our most popular dining table stone in a generous oval form.
- Blue Onyx Marble Dining Table — organic oval top in rare Blue Onyx. A statement 6 seater for those who want something genuinely unlike anything else.
- White Onyx Marble Dining Table — luminous white onyx oval, warm and glowing in evening light.
- Calacatta Viola Marble Oval Dining Table — a second Calacatta Viola oval option with a different base profile.
8 Seater Marble Dining Tables
Recommended dimensions: 200–240cm rectangular, or 200cm+ oval
Room size needed: From approximately 4m x 5m
An 8 seater marble dining table is a genuine statement piece — it anchors a large dining room and sets the tone for the entire space. At this size, rectangular and large oval forms work best: they provide the linear length needed to seat 8 comfortably while maintaining a strong visual presence.
This is where natural stone really earns its place. A large marble or travertine dining table at 8 seater scale has a presence that no timber or glass table can match — the weight, the surface area, and the natural variation of the stone all read differently at this size.
Our large-format dining tables suited to 8 seaters:
- Large Rectangular Travertine Dining Table — available in two sizes, with a distinctive curved cut-out base. A warm, organic 8 seater in natural travertine.
- Large Travertine Marble Dining Table — generous slab top with fluted column legs. Sculptural and architectural at large scale.
- Large Travertine Stone Dining Table — oval top with fluted pedestal legs. Custom sizes available on request.
- Gold Marble Rectangular Dining Table — Calacatta Oro Gold marble top with travertine base. A premium 8+ seater for large dining rooms where the table is the centrepiece.
Round vs Oval vs Rectangular: Which Shape for Which Size?
Shape affects how many people a table seats just as much as length does. Here's a quick guide:
- Round — best for 2–6 people. Encourages conversation, no awkward corners, suits square rooms. Difficult to scale beyond 6 without becoming too wide to reach across.
- Oval — best for 4–8 people. The most versatile shape — seats the same as a rectangle but feels softer and less formal. Works in both square and rectangular rooms.
- Rectangular — best for 6–10+ people. The most efficient use of space for large groups. Suits rectangular dining rooms and open-plan living areas.
How Much Room Do You Need Around the Table?
A common mistake is buying a table that fits the room — but not the chairs. As a rule of thumb:
- Allow 90cm minimum from the table edge to the nearest wall or furniture piece
- Allow 75cm minimum in very tight spaces (this is the absolute floor)
- For open-plan living areas, 120cm of clearance creates a comfortable, generous feel
So for an 8 seater rectangular table at 220cm long x 100cm wide, you'd ideally need a dining room of at least 4m x 3.2m — and preferably 5m x 4m for comfortable movement.
